On the afternoon of March 24, Professor Moncef Gabbouj, academician of the European Academy of Sciences, academician of the Academy of Finland, and University of Tampere, Finland, visited Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology - Zhongda Hospital Smart Medical Research Institute for guidance. Professor Gabbouj was accompanied by Professor Yu Li from the School of Computer Science of our school. Some teachers from the Smart Medical Research Institute participated in this academic exchange event. The event was hosted by Professor Xu Jun, deputy dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence (College of Future Technology) and executive director of the Smart Medical Research Institute.

Dean Xu Jun introduced the Smart Medical Research Institute and the research work being carried out by the institute
Dean Xu Jun first extended a warm welcome to Professor Moncef Gabbouj. Next, he introduced to Professor Gabbouj the research philosophy, research goals, medical expert team and engineering teacher team composition of the Smart Medical Research Institute, as well as specific research directions, including computational pathology, intelligent analysis of medical imaging, brain science and neuroimaging, electronic medical record data mining, medical imaging, cross-modal, multi-omics data fusion and big data analysis of disease full-stack multi-omics solutions, etc.

Subsequently, Professor Gabbouj and teachers from the Smart Medical Research Institute discussed how to apply emerging technologies such as computer vision and artificial intelligence to the medical field to solve many problems in the current medical industry. As a well-known expert in the field of computer vision, Professor Gabbouj also introduced the work of his team in the field of smart medical care and emphasized the potential and application of artificial intelligence in the medical field. Professor Gabbouj’s research in smart healthcare mainly involves artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analysis. For example, computer vision and machine learning technologies are used to improve the automatic analysis and diagnostic accuracy of medical images. His research results have been applied to medical image analysis, patient monitoring, especially the analysis of electrocardiogram signals, and disease diagnosis assistance. He also specifically pointed out that although deep learning has been widely used in medical image analysis, the inherent “black box” problem of deep learning is a bottleneck that limits its widespread clinical application. He gave an example of an interesting experiment his team had done when building a deep learning-assisted diagnosis model. They cleverly modified just one voxel value at the model’s input to completely modify the model’s diagnostic results. It can be seen that there are certain risks in blindly building a deep learning diagnostic model, so we need to be very cautious in this aspect, and it is crucial to improve the interpretability of the model. Therefore, he is very satisfied with the ongoing in-depth cooperation between engineering experts and clinicians at the Smart Medical Research Institute, and pointed out the necessity of cross-collaboration between medicine and industry. At the same time, when building a diagnostic model, it is very important to fully include the domain knowledge of medical experts, which is also an important development direction in the smart medical field. Professor Gabbouj earnestly hopes that the Smart Medical Research Institute can apply these advanced technologies in actual medical scenarios, thereby assisting Chinese doctors in providing better medical services to patients and promoting the development of the smart medical field.
