At the beginning of the new year in 2023, the Smart Medical Research Institute and the Pathology Department of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital jointly organized the New Year Pathology Artificial Intelligence Academic Salon. The Smart Medical Research Institute and the Pathology Department of Gulou Hospital have carried out scientific research cooperation for many years. Currently, they have jointly published relevant papers and jointly applied for a number of scientific research projects on the survival prediction of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. This academic salon aims to focus on areas of interest to both parties and further strengthen in-depth cooperation and exchanges between medical and engineering experts from the two units.
This academic salon was organized by Chen Jun, Director of the Pathology Department of Gulou Hospital. Participants included Director Fan Xiangshan, Director Sun Qi and Dr. Xu Yuemei of the Pathology Department of Gulou Hospital, as well as more than ten people including relevant teachers and graduate students of the Smart Medical Research Institute. The meeting was opened by Mr. Xu Jun, Executive Dean of the Institute. At the meeting, experts from both sides made relevant special reports and in-depth discussions on ongoing and future planned scientific research cooperation. Director Chen Jun of Gulou Hospital gave a report on “Research Progress in Immune Microenvironment Pathology of Primary Liver Cancer”; Director Sun Qi gave an introduction on “Clinical Needs for AI-Assisted Pathological Diagnosis”. Dr. Xu Yuemei of Gulou Hospital and Zhang Jingkai, a graduate student of the Smart Medical Research Institute, jointly gave a report on “Preliminary Exploration of Deep Learning Model-Assisted Assessment of Oxford Classification of IgA Nephropathy”. Teachers Jiao Yiping, Xuan Kai, Luo Yuemei, and Wang Xiangxue from the Smart Medical Research Institute respectively gave reports on “Tumor Microenvironment Analysis Based on Semantic Segmentation Methods”, “Fusion and Analysis of Prostate Images and Pathological Large Slices”, “Ophthalmology and Digestive Tract Micron Resolution Optical Coherence Imaging (µOCT) and Analysis”, and “Application of Computational Pathology in Cancer Prognosis and Treatment”. Teacher Li Jin from the Smart Medical Research Institute presided over the relevant report. Medical and engineering experts held a whole afternoon of “brainstorming” on the content of the report. Experts from both sides expressed their opinions until they missed dinner time. The discussion covered not only the clinical prospects of pathological AI applications and the research plans for further in-depth cooperation between the two parties, but also cutting-edge content such as pathological image analysis, advanced optical imaging systems, joint analysis of genomic data and multi-omics data.
Finally, Fan Xiangshan, director of the Pathology Department of Gulou Hospital, summarized the meeting and looked forward to the prospects of cooperation between the two sides’ medical industry. The meeting deployed and planned the recent collaborative research between the institute and the Pathology Department of Gulou Hospital. The successful holding of this meeting further deepened the mutual understanding and cooperation between the Smart Medical Research Institute and the Pathology Department of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital.
