The list is based on the Scopus database and uses the following six key factors for scoring: 1) Total citations; 2) Hirsch H-index; 3) Schreiber Hm-index modified by co-authors; 4) Sole author; 5) Sole or first author; 6) The number of citations of articles of the sole, first or last author, based on their “career influence” and “annual influence”, from 22 fields and 176 In each subfield, the top 2% of scientists in the world are selected from nearly 7 million scientists. The statistical time node of this list is from 1960 to 2022, covering 200,409 scientists around the world. It is divided into two lists: “Lifetime Scientific Influence Ranking (1960-2022)” and “2022 Scientific Influence Ranking”.

Judging from the country distribution of the top 2% of scientists in 2022, the countries with the most influential scientists in the world are still the United States (accounting for 39.88% of the world), the United Kingdom (accounting for 9.29% of the world) and Germany (accounting for 5.49% of the world). There are 7,795 scientists labeled as Mainland China (CHN) (accounting for 3.99% of the world), an increase of 852 compared to the third edition, surpassing Japan and ranking fifth in the world. Japan’s ranking dropped from fifth to sixth; India remained at 14th; South Korea remained at 17th. The ranking of Asian countries is mainland China, Japan, India, and South Korea.
